Kuala Lumpur | 5 Instagram worthy lunch spots

Hey guys,

As most of you know I recently returned back to the Netherlands after traveling for approximately 3,5 weeks in Asia. I was supposed to stay 7 weeks, but along the trip I noticed that I wasn’t really enjoying it. Not that it wasn’t a nice trip, but there are so many things happening in my life at the moment (only positive & super cool though), that it was quite hard to let that all go and fully enjoy my travels.

Anyways, after our stay in Indonesia we decided to fly over to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Most of you probably know that I have lived in KL for 6 months back in 2015, to study Marketing and PR. One of the best times of my life!

This time I visited Kuala Lumpur for 7 days, so enough time to catch up with some old friends from university. They of course all know that I’m totally into Social Media these days, so I asked them to bring me to the coolest spots of KL. To me Kuala Lumpur is the perfect mix between Asia and Europe. The entire city is super well developed and quite organized, but still has this Asian vibe.

When it comes to hotspots or instagrammable places, Kuala Lumpur is the place to be. So in this article I will show you 5 (out of the 100) Instagram worthy lunch spots that KL has to offer.

  1. Rimba & Rusa

One of my favorite places is called Rimba & Rusa. As you can see on the pictures below, the place is very light and well decorated, perfect for your Instagram photos (as lighting is everything). I really like the cosy corners and the fresh looking design. Another big plus are the marble tables outside, we all know that a good marble table can instantly make your flatlay look great.

I do have to say that Rimba & Rusa is not a very unique cafe in KL, as I noticed that a lot of lunch spots / restaurants are decorated in a Scandinavian way (with a lot of whites and wood).

The menu contains a lot of “healthy” and vegetarian dishes, something that’s quite rare in Kuala Lumpur in my opinion. I chose to eat a hummus / chicken salad with a lot of vegetables, perfect to keep me in balance after eating pancakes for breakfast ;).

2. Breakfast Thieves

Together with beauty vlogger @myrabuising I went out to have brunch at Breakfast Thieves on a Sunday. A well known hotspot within Kuala Lumpur, as many locals go there to take Instagram pictures and enjoy the food.

Just like Rimba & Rusa, the interior of this place is inspired by the Scandinavian design. The lunchroom is located in an area with many other cool places, so if it’s too busy at Breakfast Thieves, you can also go to for example Pulp or one of the another great places nearby.

The menu of breakfast thieves contains Asian as well as Western dishes, all with a fun twist: like for example blue rice.

3. VCR

Compared to the two hotspots mentioned above, VCR is a more dark and rustic place. The cafe is based in an all black building without any windows in the front. It looks a bit obscure from the outside, but whenever you’ve entered the café you’ll find yourself in a very cool and modern environment.

When I was looking for cool places to have lunch, I randomly found VCR via Instagram. Their Instagram is full of cool & high quality photo’s of the food. It looked so good that I had to pay a visit. Next to having lunch / breakfast or dinner, VCR is according to me a great place to do some (home) work.

The menu contains some basic dishes like avocado toast, french toast, cake and american breakfast, but also cool (and new to me) dishes, like soft shell crab. The avocado toast was literally the best one I’ve had in a looong time, so it’s definitely worth a visit.

 4. Softsrve

Softsrve is definitely one of the cutest places I’ve been to while staying in Kuala Lumpur. A very minimal and Scandinavian ice-cream shop where they serve several kinds of soft deserts in funny flavors. Go soft or go home ;).

5. Leaf & Co

The interior of Leaf & Co is not particularly fancy, but it shows all the history of the place it’s located in. Time has taken a relentless toll on this building on a corner of a busy street in Chinatown. After having weathered the colonial rule, a World War & decades of commercial wear it’s now newly transformed into a hostel with an in-house cafe on the ground floor, called Leaf & Co.

The cafe’s repertoire spans East and West. Leaf & Co serves dishes like fried chicken leg with Malaysian fried rice, Indonesian sambal terasi & Thai-dressed sweet-sour salad.

For all the coffee lovers out there: I’m not a big fan of coffee myself, but I’ve heard many people raving about the coffee served at Leaf & Co ;).
